In an age where TikToks go viral in seconds and podcasts dominate commutes, you might think radio’s best days are behind it. But Mediacorp’s 987 STAR is here to prove that radio isn’t just surviving — it’s thriving. And it’s evolving with the next generation of bold, fresh voices ready to take the airwaves by storm.
Now into its latest season, 987 STAR is more than just a competition— it’s a launchpad.A spotlight that challenges young Singaporeans to step behind the mic, speak up, and stir the conversations that matter. For aspiring DJs, it’s a dream ticket into broadcast media. For listeners, it’s an unfiltered look into the future of radio. What is 987 STAR?
Launched by Mediacorp’s youth-centric station 987FM, 987 STAR is a nationwide talent search open to Singaporeans and PRs aged 18 to 28. The contest is on the lookout for individuals with a magnetic voice, standout personality, and a strong social media game.
The winner walks away with a $5,000 cash prize and, more importantly, a coveted opportunity — a shot at a radio career with 987FM.
But this isn’t just about winning. Finalists get the chance to participate in a one-of-a-kind radio bootcamp, where they’ll sharpen their skills in hosting, content creation, public speaking, and personal branding. With hands-on training from radio veterans and media professionals, every contestant gets a chance to grow into the role of a modern radio star.
Mentorship from Media Icons: Sonia & Joakim
One of the biggest highlights of 987 STAR? The chance to learn from two of the station’s most iconic voices — Sonia Chew and Joakim Gomez. Sonia, known for her authentic on-air presence, stresses that success in radio isn’t just about sounding cool. “It’s going to be tough to sift through the talent. What really stands out is the ability to connect — and to bring that extra bit of spice,” she says. “A lot of people live by the phrase, ‘Here for a good time, not a long time,’ but this industry isn’t about coasting. You’ve got to be sincere and hardworking”

Joakim, who’s journeyed from Singapore Idol to morning radio host, echoes the sentiment. “We’re looking for someone who’s as hungry as we are — someone open, eager to learn, and willing to take direction. That attitude goes a long way” Their mentorship is more than technical training — it’s an invitation into a mindset of resilience, authenticity, and hustle.
The Road to Radio Stardom
