Enrolling in a course that is not of your top choice may not always be a bad idea. It turned out to be the best thing ever for Jin Ning Xian.

When Jin Ning Xian received his O-Level results, he was ecstatic and disappointed at the same time.

This is because he scored good grades for all subjects except English, for which he had an E8. “I was very disappointed with my results although I did well for all other subjects,” said Ning Xian.

Reluctantly, he enrolled in Republic Polytechnic’s Diploma in Information Technology, but little did he know that this was going to be the greatest journey in his academic life.

An all-rounded individual, Ning Xian, 25, not only acquired a GPA of 3.5, but has also been recognised for his dedication to the School of Infocomm (SOI) club. Additionally, Ning Xian came in second in the China Huawei Atlas AI Developer Challenge Competition in 2019, a testament to his impeccable skills in the IT field. “I really felt a sense of achievement when I received the award, especially considering how we competed with the top universities in China,” said Ning Xian.

Ning Xian said that RP has not only equipped him with knowledge in the IT field, but moulded him in becoming an empathetic individual who gives back to the community.

Ning Xian was an active member of the SOI Club under the joint community decision, which exposed him to an array of community services like organising a local service learning project alongside Rainbow Centre. For his notable contribution, he was a recipient of the Republic Award and even attained a Silver for the MAD Service Learner Award.

When he was in Year Three, he completed his internship at National Computer Systems (NCS) in Singapore, under the robotics department where he delved deeper into the way a robot works. He said: “RP has a wonderful teaching approach which allows me to identify the problem and discover the solution quickly. It helped me a lot when I was doing my internship.”

A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor. Like many of us, Ning Xian experienced a couple of hurdles in his journey as a student. He mentioned that one of his biggest challenges would be time management, as he was always involved with workshops, competitions and events in the SOI Club. He said that setting priorities right and having a schedule helps a lot. “My education at RP has helped me to handle and overcome difficulties. To me, it is a meaningful, wonderful and unforgettable journey,” added Ning Xian.
