Graduation day marks a significant milestone, signalling the transition from student life to the professional realm. Among the myriad of graduates, Muhammad Ilyas Bin Fadil, a third-year student in the Diploma in Mass Communication (DMC) at Republic Polytechnic (RP), stands poised to embark on his journey into the working world. Let’s delve into Ilyas’s experiences at RP and his aspirations beyond academia.

Choosing the Path Less Travelled

“Reserved”, and “Reclusive” are two words Ilyas would use to describe himself. However, he found resonance in the field of Mass Communication, drawn by its diverse career prospects and opportunities for personal growth. His decision to pursue the DMC program stemmed from a desire to challenge himself, build confidence, and explore his linguistic aptitude within a supportive academic environment.

Throughout his tenure at RP, Ilyas’s journey has been characterised by a tapestry of experiences, each contributing to his personal and professional development. From the highs of academic achievements to the challenges of overseas internships, every moment has shaped his resilience and adaptability.

RP’s curriculum provided Ilyas with a robust foundation of technical and soft skills essential for the modern workplace. From video editing to effective communication, he honed his abilities and cultivated a strong work ethic. The emphasis on practical learning, exemplified by projects like the DrugFreeSG Video Competition 2022, instilled in him the importance of resilience and collaboration in the face of challenges.

The Overseas Internship Experience

During his five-month internship in Bangkok, Thailand, Ilyas delved into the rich tapestry of traditional ASEAN performing arts, working closely with Dr. Paphutsorn Wongratanapitak. Embracing roles spanning from assistant to videographer and video editor, he navigated through the intricate landscape of cultural expression.

Despite grappling with language barriers and cultural disparities, Ilyas found solace in the preparation provided by RP’s Cross-Cultural Communication module. This equipped him with the necessary awareness and adaptability to thrive in a foreign environment. The experience served as a crucible where he not only honed his technical skills but also discovered new facets of personal growth.

The internship broadened Ilyas’s understanding of workplace dynamics abroad, offering invaluable insights into the intersection of culture and professional life. Despite the challenges encountered, he emerged with a newfound confidence, ready to embrace future endeavours with poise and resilience. This transformative experience not only enriched his professional repertoire but also left an indelible mark on his journey of self-discovery and readiness for the opportunities that lie ahead.

As part of his overseas Internship, Ilyas learnt a traditional Thai dance and performed with grace under  “Absolutely Thai” which was established under Kansadaeng Watthanatham Co., Ltd, a partner of Chulalongkorn University. Their aim is to show their Thai culture globally through their Thai, Indonesian and Southeast Asian traditional performing arts. (PHOTO: Muhammad Ilyas Bin Fadil)
