From her humble beginnings to becoming Singapore’s President, her journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the pursuit of excellence in the face of uncertainty.  

Madam Halimah Yacob’s narrative is one of transformation amidst uncertainty. Emerging from a crossroads after completing her A levels, she questioned her next steps. She embarked on a journey marked by doubts about her future as she applied to Singapore University, now known as National University of Singapore, without a clear sense of direction.

Through her experiences, she discovered invaluable lessons that resonate with individuals grappling with uncertainty worldwide.

“People always say to follow your passion,” said Madam Halimah Yacob. “I’m a bit reluctant to say that because sometimes your passion is not what you are good at doing.” 

She fosters adaptability, continuous learning, and embracing change. This approach empowers individuals to thrive amidst uncertainties by equipping them with skills and mindset necessary to navigate shifting paradigms.

In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, characterised by technological advancements and geopolitical uncertainties, the notion of job security has become increasingly elusive.  

Long gone are the days where people would work for a single company their entire lives, expecting stability and protection. Madam Halimah recognises this and advocates for cultivating internal resilience to navigate the unpredictability of the external world. Youths must embrace flexibility, adaptability, and continuous learning, to thrive in the changing dynamic global environment. 

Continuous Learning and Future Preparedness

Madam Halimah Yacob reveals that even the President’s job is a repetitive routine, common to many other jobs. She stresses the importance of upskilling and lifelong learning. As industries undergo rapid transformation, individuals must remain agile and adaptable, continuously upgrading their skill sets to remain relevant in the job market. 

Youths often express their fear of the uncertain, especially towards what their future holds. Madam Halimah Yacob advocates for viewing one’s job not merely as a routine task, but as a means to add value and contribute to society. She believes that by adopting this perspective, individuals can derive fulfilment from their work and remain motivated to pursue excellence in their respective fields.  

It is never too late to keep finding and figuring out our strengths and weaknesses. With the uncertainty of many youths regarding the future, we can look for the possible opportunities to showcase our  skills or talents, build our portfolios and see what aligns best with our capabilities.
